One of the sure signs of spring in the South is the Masters golf tournament at Augusta National Golf Club and its magnificent display of azaleas blanketing the flower beds around the course.
You don’t even have to be a golf fan to be blown away by the beauty of this course. Its spring show is unparalleled when the 30+ varieties of azaleas in all shades of pink are in full bloom.🌺
And what better way to soak up this view on a lovely spring day (even if only on tv) than by sipping on an Azalea, the official drink of the Masters?
This light and refreshing cocktail served during the tournament is aptly named after the gorgeous pink azaleas that surround number 13, their display making it one of the most famous holes in professional golf.
What’s in an Azalea Cocktail?
The Azalea is made up of vodka, lemon juice, pineapple juice, and grenadine. Its light and fruity sweetness is oh so delicious!!
The splash of grenadine (a pomegranate flavored mixer) gives this golf cocktail its “pretty in azalea pink” color.
Azalea Martini Tips.
- Quantities: I’ve shared the recipe at the bottom of the post in ratios instead of exact measurements to make it simple to adjust for the number of servings.
This drink is well suited for any quantity from a single cocktail straight up in a martini or coupe glass, to big batches made ahead of time for a Masters themed get together. I’ve made it in pitchers to serve as the signature cocktail a couple of times for golf parties and it’s always a hit.
- Adjustments and Substitutions: Ratios can be tinkered with to your taste and you can even substitute gin for the vodka. Adjust the amount of grenadine for more or less intense pink color.
- Garnish: Make it even prettier with a lemon slice or a mint sprig. (Just be aware that real azalea flowers are toxic—not something you want floating in your drink.)
When to Serve the Azalea Cocktail.
The Azalea isn’t just for a Masters viewing party. It’s also a perfect drink for:
- Valentine’s Day or Galentines Day
- Bridal shower
- Baby shower
- Ladies brunch
- Mother’s Day
- Book Club
Make sure to serve up this classic cocktail in a glass that shows off its azalea pink color and enjoy!
The Azalea may just give mint juleps for Kentucky Derby viewing a “run” for their money as a favorite southern spring tradition.
