Whether you’re hosting a St. Paddy’s Day party or just simply want to get in the shamrock spirit, this easy Irish flag shooter is a showy and tasty option to the standard shot of Irish whiskey or mug of green beer!
This vibrant layered drink pays homage to the tri-color Irish flag with colorful stripes of creme de menthe, Irish cream, and Grand Marnier liqueurs all in a single festive glass.
Hold up—mint and orange? Although this combination may sound unappealing (like eating an orange after brushing your teeth), this odd combo works because of the creamy center of everyone’s favorite Irish liqueur—Bailey’s Irish Cream. Its rich chocolate and vanilla yumminess brings everything together for a wonderful flavor similar to an Andes Mint or Peppermint Patty.

Instructions for Festive Irish Flag Shots.
This shot is all about successful layering to show its stripes! There are two tricks to keeping the layers separate:
- Keeping the order of the layers makes a difference in keeping them separate.
- Sloooowwwwwly pouring the top two layers over the back of a spoon.
Follow these steps for a perfect Irish Flag Shot:
1. First Liqueur Layer (Green): Pour the Creme de Menthe into the bottom third of the shot glass. The amount of liquid will depend on how large the shot glass is.
Shot layering trick using the back of a spoon.
For the next two liqueurs, follow this technique for keeping the layers separate:
2. Second Liqueur Layer (White): The next layer is the Irish Cream Liqueur.
First, attach a speed pourer to the alcohol bottle or put a little bit into a small glass or jigger to better control the flow.
Next, hold a small spoon just above the liquid’s surface with the bowl side up and the tip of the spoon against the side of the glass.
Then slowly pour the liqueur over the back of the spoon, allowing it to ever-so-gently cascade over the first layer until you’ve filled another third of the glass. Patience is key to achieving well-defined layers!
SH&H Tip: After a couple of attempts, I was most successful by holding the tip of the speed pourer directly against the spoon and letting the liqueur trickle over the previous layer.
3. Third Layer (Orange): Fill the last third of the shot glass with the orange top layer of Grand Marnier using the same spoon technique as above.
You can use a smaller one-ounce shot glass or pony glass if you’re going more for taste than show, but this drink’s “wow” factor is better in a tall shooter glass!
