By the time May rolls around, my house always seems ready for summer break.
The “cozy” decor starts feeling oppressive once the heat kicks in. Warm throws are no longer inviting. And even though I still love my home exactly as it is, I start craving rooms that feel lighter, more relaxed, and a little less buttoned-up for the summer season.
Summer decorating in my home is less about completely changing my style and more about loosening it up a little. I still love collected rooms, blue and white accents, natural textures, and spaces that look warm and inviting year-round. Summer just gives everything a slightly more laid back look.

So I mostly worked with what I already had in place and a few simple switchups:
- Lighter fabrics.
- More greenery.
- Hydrangeas.
- Woven textures.
- And a few subtle coastal touches.
Come on in, and I’ll show you the simple summer home decor ideas I used to give my home an easy layered summer look!
The Entryway: A Relaxed Summer Welcome.
One of the first places I like to freshen up for summer is the entry because it sets the tone for the whole house.

I didn’t completely redecorate this foyer table. I mostly swapped in a few accessories that are a little lighter and more organic fitting this time of year.

For summer, I tend to gravitate toward pieces with a slightly coastal influence without making the house look overly beach-themed. They add seasonal interest and texture while still feeling like my everyday style.

These oversize faux branches reflect the greenery outside right now and their height makes a dramatic statement, bringing life to the entry table. The “coral” bowl next to them gives the console a coastal-style touch.
This soft watercolor landscape fills the frame that’s always in place. Its lovely shady oak tree scene with muted blues and greens would work beautifully here year-round, but it feels especially appropriate during summer.

On the lower shelf, a stack of rattan cane boxes and a woven jute rope bowl filled with decoupage chinoiserie oyster shells bring in casual natural elements that automatically make my home look a little more summery without needing a lot of actual seasonal decor.
A Collected Summer Living Room with Relaxed Coastal Touches.
The living room is where my everyday decorating style probably shows up the most, even in summer.

I’m always drawn to spaces that feel collected, layered, and comfortable with a mix of classic traditional pieces, natural textures, subtle coastal touches, and a little Palm Beach influence worked in. Summer is actually the easiest season for decorating for me because I can leave so many accessories in place that already lean into that Southern coastal style I love so much.

The darker sofa, wood floors, stone fireplace, and larger furniture pieces already bring a lot of contrast and interest into the room, so I focus the decor more on balancing them with lighter textures, greenery, some subtle color, and woven accents this time of year.

Woven textures instantly make a room feel more casual, and I keep wicker and rattan pieces in my home year-round because they fit naturally into my overall style. But they especially shine during warmer months.
The wicker cane tray on the side table, the basket tucked near the fireplace, and even the large rattan bowl layered above the entertainment center all help soften the room and give it that easygoing summer feel.

I also added extra greenery throughout the room. The oversized palm in the corner brings the coastal Palm Beach vibe and helps draw your eye upward, which helps make the room appear brighter and more open.

I love using these branches or other organic greenery on the mantel because it feels less formal and help soften all of the hard neutral surfaces without needing a traditional floral arrangement.
The blue and olive green pillows mixed with lighter throws help bring in that casual Palm Beach-inspired look. I didn’t even buy these pillows together but I love the color palette so much they might not just be “summer” pillows.

On the entertainment center wall, I already had it decorated with natural textures like rattan and leather, and blue and white chinoiserie pieces to bring color and lightness. So even though nothing has changed for summer, it looks right for the warm months already without adding specific seasonal decor.

Because the wall unit and fireplace wall are already dominant focal points, I always try to keep the styling simple, which of course works well for summer.

The coffee table is where I did add a couple of seasonal touches. Everything remained the same as usual, but with the addition of green hydrangeas in a blue and white chinoiserie vase…

And this gold crab for the perfect touch of summer coastal style.

Summer Kitchen Decor That Still Feels Like My Everyday Style.
The kitchen is one of those spaces where I’ve learned I don’t need to do very much seasonally to make it feel fresh for summer.
What surprised me after decorating this kitchen for summer for the first time was how much lighter this space could look without changing any of the dark permanent fixtures. The warm toned cabinets, copper cookware, and brown granite are all still very much there, but the woven textures, greenery, and blue-and-white ceramics help the room look brighter.

Because there is already so much warmth and visual weight from the stained wood cabinetry and granite, lighter accessories and natural textures tend to stand out without needing a lot of extra decor. Which is a plus, because I want the counters to remain functional.

For this season, I mostly focus on simple organic arrangements, woven texture, and blue and white accessories that are classic instead of overly trendy.
The large floral arrangement on the island became the main focal point for summer this year. I used soft green viburnum and white hydrangeas mixed with airy fern greenery in a blue and white vase that’s traditional but still summer-casual.

I also brought in woven textures again here because they help tie the kitchen’s style in with the living room. The wicker tray under the arrangement softens all of the hard stone and wood surfaces and adds that subtle Southern coastal influence that runs through so much of my home. The shell accessories say summer without going full beach theme.

I also like leaving a little breathing room on the counters. Too many accessories alongside darker cabinetry can start to look too weighed down. Less decor tends to make the counters look cleaner and more usable for everyday life. A small summer touch on the back counter was just enough—yellow lemons in this lemonade beverage dispenser.
If decorating kitchen counters always feels tricky, I shared more of my favorite tips for balancing pretty and practical in this post: How to Style Kitchen Counters Without Creating Clutter.

In the breakfast area, I kept the table exactly the same as from spring with another rattan tray layered with blue and white accessories, and blue and green placemats. I simply replaced the spring blossom branches with a summery fern sprig.

Using some of the same colors and textures in both of these adjacent spaces keeps everything flowing together without looking too matched.

A Light and Airy Dining Room for Summer.
The dining room sits right off the entry in my home, so even when I’m not actively using it, I still like it to look welcoming and a little styled as you walk into the house. Even though nothing in here screams “summer decor,” the greenery and simplified styling make the room feel finished, inviting, and not overly formal—which is exactly how I want my home to feel during summer.

Because this room already has darker wood furniture, an ornate mirror, and a crystal chandelier bringing in so much visual detail, it doesn’t really need a lot of extra decor. I love how the vintage chandelier takes on an almost different personality this time of year! During the holidays it feels more dramatic and formal, but in summer the sunlight hitting all the crystals makes the room feel lighter, softer, and almost airy.

I kept the table very minimal with a large DIY moss centerpiece bowl. I love how the organic texture and pop of green instantly softens the formal dining room. Summer decorating usually works better in this space when it’s simple and more edited instead of heavily layered like I would during fall or holidays.

On the French antique sideboard, I placed an arrangement of ferns and white orchids in a classic urn planter. The greenery offsets all of the hard, dark, heavier elements in the room, bringing some life and freshness.
How Do You Decorate Your House for Summer Without Looking Beachy?
The easiest way to make a home feel summery without turning it into a wannabe beach house is to focus on texture and softer styling instead of themed decor.

As you’ve seen in my home, that means:
- lighter fabrics
- woven textures
- greenery and hydrangeas
- blue-and-white accents
- fewer heavy layers
- simple organic arrangements
Small, simple changes like these tend to give rooms a brighter, more relaxed, and more summery look without completely changing your everyday decorating style. And I’ve found that most rooms don’t need very much. A simple bowl of moss, a woven tray, fresh greenery, or lighter pillows are usually all it takes.

There’s something about summer decorating that feels a little more forgiving than every other season. Maybe it’s the summer vacation state of mind, but rooms don’t seem to need quite as much this time of year to feel welcoming.
A house can still feel cozy and collected without being overly layered or heavily decorated. I think that’s what I love most about summer. Everything just feels a little easier.
