Best Boudin Dip Recipe: Easy Peasy Spicy Cheesy

This easy boudin dip recipe could just be your gameday ticket. (And did I mention it just takes a few ingredients and only about 30 minutes?)
What is Boudin Dip?
This yummy appetizer is a blend of crumbled boudin sausage (pork, rice, and Cajun seasonings) with the casing removed, and mixed with cheddar cheese, sour cream, and fresh green onions. It’s baked till warm and bubbly, and it’s delicious, filling, and a bit addicting.
And What Exactly is in Boudin?
This Louisiana staple may not be well known everywhere, but you’ll wonder where it’s been all your life. It’s even fun to sayโrepeat after me: “BOO-dan“.
Boudin is mixture of cooked pork, rice, onions, bell peppers, and lots of spices wrapped up in a sausage casing, which is steamed, grilled, or smoked.
Although it’s referred to as boudin sausage, it’s not really a sausage. The easiest way I find to describe it to newbies is that it’s dirty rice stuffed in a sausage casing.
Boudin originated in France before making it’s way to southwest Louisiana and it was a way to use as much of the hog as possible. Don’t let that turn you off because nowadays, most boudin sold in grocery stores is straight up regular pork. (You may still find a bit of old school pork liver or heart in your boudin or dirty rice in local authentic eateries around New Orleans.)

Ingredients for Boudin Dip.
To make this cheesy dip you only need a few simple ingredients:

- 1 pound boudin sausage
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 8 oz sour cream
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, or meltable cheese of choice
- 1/4 cup chopped green onion, divided
Optional:
- 1 tablespoon of Tony Chachere seasoning, hot sauce, or other Cajun seasoning (or to taste)
- 2 tablespoons bacon crumbles for garnish
How to Make Boudin Dip.
1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees.
2. Crumble the boudin. Slice open the boudin casing and easily peel it away. Crumble it with your fingers into a mixing bowl and set aside.
3. Combine cream cheese (softened) and the sour cream in a large bowl and mix until smooth either with a spoon, spatula, or hand mixer.
4. Add the boudin, shredded cheese, 2 tablespoons of the green onions, and optional spice to the cream cheese mixture and stir to combine.
5. Transfer mixture from mixing bowl to a baking dish (approximately 1 qt.). I used a pretty pie baker that turned out to be the perfect size.
6. Bake at 350 degrees uncovered for 20-30 minutes, until warmed all the way through.
7. Garnish with remaining green onions and bacon crumbles if desired.
FAQ’s for Boudin Dip.
Can you serve boudin dip cold? No need to constantly babysit this to keep it warm at a partyโit will still be delicious when it cools down.
Or, this same hot boudin dip recipe can be prepared even faster by making it a cold boudin dip recipe. It’s a matter of taste because everything including the pork is already cooked. (If you do make this a no bake boudin dip, it’ll be full of flavor but the cheese won’t melt and the green onions will be stronger.)
What if I can’t get boudin? The Zummo’s brand that I use is actually sold in about half of the 50 states in Walmart of all places! And let me tell you Zummo’s is yummo. But if you can’t find any, you can whip up your own dirty rice with ground sausage or ground beef, the trinity (onion, bell pepper, celery), lots of Cajun seasoning, and rice.
Is boudin dip spicy? I don’t find boudin dip to be spicy at all without the extra Cajun seasoning so that’s why I add it. But spice level is a personal preference!
Can I use other cheeses besides cheddar? Any cheese that melts well will be just as good. Try pepper jack cheese or Monterey Jack.
Can I make this dip lower in fat? You can substitute low fat sour cream or use yogurt and a low fat cream cheese. Feel free to use low fat shredded cheese, but it won’t melt the same way.
What else can I make with boudin? Now that you’ve discovered how tasty boudin is, try the best known boudin appetizer, fried boudin balls.
Can you make boudin dip ahead? Mix together all of the ingredients without baking up to 2-3 days ahead and store it in the fridge. Set it out for 30 minutes before baking. Or to freeze this dip, store it in the freezer for one to three months, thaw in the refrigerator overnight, transfer to a baking dish and bake before serving.
What to Serve With Boudin Dip.
Most anything you’d serve a hearty dip with also works with boudin dip:
- Corn chips, tortilla chips, or pretzels
- Toasted bread rounds or garlic bread
- Crackers like saltines, Ritz, or Wheat Thins
- Veggies like celery sticks and carrots
Serving and Storage.
Serve this dip warm and let it sit out no more than two to three hours. You can always heat it up again before that window ends to maintain food safety temperatures. Or you can keep it in a warming tray.
Store leftover dip in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days.
