Come Sit By Me: Volume 94
Inside: Welcome to the weekend and our weekly catch-up, Come Sit By Me. I’m spilling the sweet tea on what’s happened this week, what’s inspiring me, and a few things that have caught my eye that I think you’ll love too!

Welcome to “Come Sit By Me”! It’s our chance to catch up on the little things I’d share with you this week if we could chat on the porch over coffee (or wine depending on the time of day).
Life Lately in a Nutshell.

I’ve spent this week decorating for fall and writing a post about fall quotes for Monday, while it’s a sweltering 105 degrees outside. Yes, it does feel completely ridiculous, but that’s August in Texas. If I waited for it to feel like fall before I started decorating, I’d be putting the pumpkins out sometime around Thanksgiving.
The heat also sent my car battery over the edge. The ignition button had been acting a little temperamental lately, which I’d chosen to ignore until I actually had to deal with it. Unfortunately that time was now. I took it to the shop and found out that replacing the battery actually meant replacing two batteries and taking the seat out of the car to get to them. And since it was already there, I decided to keep the money flowing and had the brakes done that I’ve been putting off too. Not my idea of a fun splurge.
I listened to a podcast this week that I found really entertaining, and it has kind of stuck in my head. It was an episode of The Art of Manliness, and the guest was Ian Bogost, who wrote about all the tactile gratifications we’re losing as more and more things become automated or are replaced by flat screens.
It sent me down memory lane thinking about all the little things we used to physically do. Dialing a rotary phone. Rolling down a car window with a crank. Putting a key into the ignition. Driving a stick shift. Pushing a cassette into a tape deck. Flipping through albums or CDs. Pulling the card out of the pocket in the back of a library book. Using a Rolodex. Tearing a concert ticket. Putting coins into a pay phone. Turning the dial on an old TV. And those old credit card machines that slid back and forth over the raised numbers on your card—remember those?
Even things that aren’t really nostalgic are disappearing. Actual buttons and knobs in cars are becoming touchscreens, taking away that satisfying little click. Boarding passes and tickets are only on our phones. We tell Alexa to turn on the lights instead of flipping a switch. And restaurants point you toward a QR code instead of handing you a menu (which is one modern convenience I do not personally care for).
Don’t get me wrong, I love all our conveniences. But I’ve never really thought about how much enjoyment we got from some of those simple physical interactions. Now I’m noticing them everywhere. So now I’m curious… what other things would you add to the list?
