Welcome to “Come Sit By Me”! It’s our chance to catch up on the little things I’d share with you this week if we could chat on the porch over coffee (or wine depending on the time of day).
Life Lately in a Nutshell.
This week I got away for a few days to Lake City, Colorado. We stayed in the coziest little cabin with a creek running right past. At night we left the windows open just to fall asleep to the sound of rushing water…it was soooo peaceful. 😊 Here’s a view from the back porch:

I hiked for what I’d consider to be the very first time while we were there, and our second day we tackled Handies Peak, a fourteener (that means the elevation is 14,000+ feet). Let’s just say I huffed, puffed, and gasped for air the entire way up, but I made it to the top, and now I can officially check it off the list. Here’s proof:

We hiked every day, but my favorite trail hands down was Cataract Gulch. It winds up a mountain through the most beautiful woods dotted with wildflowers and waterfalls. We realized after when we got there and saw all the bear warning signs that we’d left the bear spray behind. I just knew this was the place I’d live if I were a bear, and there were plenty of berry bushes lining the trail (aka bear snacks). But thankfully, the only wildlife we came across was another hiker’s dog. The slower pace was more my speed than the 14er, and even though my lungs never really adjusted to the altitude during the whole trip, the gorgeous scenery made me keep going to fully take in as much as I could until we left.

Lake City itself completely won me over. With only about 400 people living there in the off season, it feels like a secret heaven tucked away in the mountains and the views are breathtaking. It’s a little harder to get to than a lot of other Colorado destinations, but I can’t think of many other places this beautiful that aren’t overrun with hoards of people trying to enjoy the same thing at the same time.

We ended the trip with dinner in their tiny, charming downtown with some friends that have a second home there. We capped off the night with what they swore was the best ice cream shop ever. They weren’t wrong—San Juan Soda Company is the most darling place, and the ice cream did live up to the hype.
