The holiday season is upon us, and it’s always fun to check out what’s hot in holiday decor before we dive into decorating.
This year’s trends offer something for every decorating style from sophisticated moody jewel tones, to tried-and-true classic red and green decor, and even simply no ornaments at all.
Whether you want to have your home decked in the latest and greatest, need to freshen up what you currently have, or just find it fun to look (like me), here’s what I found that’s trending for the 2024 Christmas season!
How I Compiled the Latest Holiday Trends List.
In addition to doing my research on what design experts are predicting, plus checking out what the stores are carrying this year, I recently took a trip to the mega Christmas destination, Guess and Company. In a tiny town between Little Rock and Memphis, this warehouse feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere. But it is so phenomenal people make a special trip during the short eight weeks it’s open.
I took one for the team and spent hours in this place (in the name of research😉), just drinking in the Christmas decor ideas and magical holiday inspiration! I’ve followed Paul Guess on Facebook for a bit and he creates gorgeous trees, wreaths, and centerpieces like these I saw in the warehouse:
You’ll get to see a little more of their fabulous work—a few of the photos in this post feature a sampling of their beautiful trees to illustrate some of the latest holiday trends (you’ll be able to pick them out by the not-so-beautiful warehouse setting.😂)
Holiday Theme Trends for the Upcoming Season.
Some of these themes are more classic, some seem more trendy, but all are hot this year!
Nostalgic, Vintage, and Retro.
This timeless look may be the biggest “trend” of all right now. Think vintage Christmas decorations like rosy-cheeked Santas circa the 1950s, ceramic trees, and large C-9 retro lights. This decorating style evokes memories of Christmases past and pairs beautifully with a more traditional look, like a red and green Christmas color scheme.
More decorating tips: Decorate with vintage ornaments, classic plaid ribbons, tinsel garlands, and colored string lights for an authentic nostalgic look. Mix in tabletop decorations like mini ceramic Santas or village scenes. Add a couple of retro blow molds to your outdoor decor.
Rustic, Woodland, and Natural.
This trend draws inspiration from nature, using natural materials to create a rustic look—think pinecones, greenery, and wood. Earthy tones and warm browns pair beautifully with greenery to evoke the cozy feel of a winter cabin.
More decorating tips: Use wooden beads for garlands, birch logs as centerpiece accents, and natural greenery like cedar and eucalyptus for wreaths. Complete the look with burlap ribbons and linen stockings.
Metallics and Glam.
With this decorating style, it’s all about shimmer and shine. Metallics in silver, gold, champagne and copper make a glamorous statement. Crystal strands are popular for this theme as you can see in the tree below. Silver tinsel is rumored to be making a comeback and would be stunning with this theme.
More decorating tips: Add in rhinestone ornaments and reflective or mirrored surfaces like trays or disco balls to amp up the sparkle . Mix in glittery sprays or picks to add shimmer to your tree or garlands.
Jewel Tones.
Moody jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, amethyst purple, and ruby red have been super popular in the past year and are a sophisticated option for the upcoming holiday season. Deep colors like burgundy, teal, and eggplant pair well with rich textures like velvet and satin (and a nice wine—pun intended).
More decorating tips: Decorate the tree with jewel-tone ornaments and velvet or satin ribbon in complementary colors. Incorporate gold and brass metals. Use velvet pillows to carry the theme throughout the room. For the dining table, pair dark jewel-toned napkins with gold or brass cutlery and napkin rings.
Candyland.
This playful and whimsical theme is a fun way to bring child-like joy into your holiday home.
Classic gingerbread and candy canes were big last year and looks like they will be again. The more trendy version is the pink, aqua, and lime green color Candyland theme.
More decorating tips: Decorate with oversized lollipops, gingerbread houses, candy cane wreaths, and colorful bottlebrush trees. Wrap boxes in bright candy-striped paper and display them under the tree or on shelves for extra theme decor.
Minimalist.
Sparse trees, neutral ornaments, and even trees with no ornaments at all are trending in minimalist decor for a more understated style. I get this trend—sometimes before decorating or undecorating the tree, I just enjoy the peacefulness of the plain green tree and its magical white twinkling lights.
More decorating tips: Stick to a neutral palette with white, gray, and metallic accents. Use simple, Scandinavian-inspired ornaments like wooden stars or paper snowflakes, and leave plenty of negative space for a light, airy feel.
Pink Christmas.
This hot trend is sometimes referred to as “Pink-mas”! It can be soft, feminine, and elegant with pastel pinks and blushes.
Or it can be fun and playful with vibrant colors like hot pink and fushcia. I feel like I need this preppy pink and green tree in my life:
More decorating tips: Combine pink ornaments with gold or champagne accents for an elegant look. Or incorporate hot pink decor with complementary vibrant colors like bright green for a bold statement.
Winter Wonderland.
This Christmas classic never goes out of style (kind of like a white kitchen) but its glamorous, elegant, and serene look is so in. Frosty white Christmas decor looks magical with shimmering silver. And the dripping crystal strands that are trending would be perfect for this theme.
More decorating tips: Use faux snow and flocked pine cones and greenery picks to create the snowy effect. Add clear glass, mercury glass, or icicle ornaments to reflect light and amplify the wintery theme.
Grinchmas.
The playful Dr. Seuss Grinchmas theme with its quirky accents has been going strong in recent years. There’s the traditional bright red and green Christmas color scheme, but it can also be found in a fresh hot pink and lime green version.
More decorating tips: Use lime-green ornaments and bold striped ribbons. Decorate with plush Grinches or Seuss signs to complete the look.
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly.
Sustainability is a buzzword not only for interior design, but carries over into Christmas trends. Holiday decorations made of paper, wood, felt, or wool are hugely popular. And DIY handmade decorations to fit this theme really add a personal touch to holiday decor.
More decorating tips: Decorate with honeycomb paper trees and ornaments. paper snowflakes, bottle brush trees, handmade ornaments, and dried orange slices. Wrap gifts in recycled paper or brown kraft paper. Collect foraged greenery to make natural wreaths and garlands.
Monochromatic.
A monochromatic look is perfect for those seeking simplicity. Stick to one color whether white, metallic, or a single jewel tone to create a cohesive, chic, and designer-worthy display with big impact.
More decorating tips: Mix different textures and finishes within the same color family. Add depth and dimension with ribbon and picks in the same hue.
Apres Ski.
This cozy theme brings the charm of a ski lodge into your home with plaid, flannel, faux fur, and rustic wood elements. It makes for a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for this chilly time of year.
More decorating tips: Decorate with plaid throws and scarves, antlers, sleds, skis, faux fur tree skirts, and cable knit stockings. Set up a hot cocoa bar as part of your decor for a welcoming, cozy touch.
Holiday Ornament and Decor Trends.
Trees with Ball Garlands.
This trend is usually monochromatic and so dramatic! It’s achieved by stringing loads of different sized ball ornaments on a wire or fishing line and winding the ball garland to flow down the tree. These trees usually have no other ornaments other than some picks.
Candles on Trees.
The next photo is a nice segue from the last tree decor trend. This drop dead gorgeous tree has the ball garland look elevated even more with groupings of taper candles. Battery operated tapers hanging from fishing line or clip-on candle holders add a bit of vintage-inspired European charm. And they looks amazing with muted jewel tone colors.
Nutcrackers.
These soldiers of classic Christmas decorations seem to be everywhere. Plus they come in tons of different theme and color versions making them super customizable to your style and decor. People are so nutcracker crazy there are Facebook groups devoted to hunting down and painting the viral six-foot white Walmart nutcracker, like these:
Big Jewel Ornaments.
Oversized jewel ornaments are a hot trend that make a bold, glamorous statement.
Disco Balls.
These retro-inspired decorations add sparkle and fun, especially with a glam metallic or pink theme.
Mushrooms.
Whimsical mushroom ornaments are a trend that I don’t quite get. (Are mushrooms the new gnome?) They fit in most “naturally” with the natural elements of the woodland theme.
Bows.
Bows are having a big moment on social media—everything from sumptuous velvet bows tied on the end of tree branches, to giant satin bows on trees and over front doors.
Honeycomb Paper Trees and Ornaments.
These trendy decorations fit with three of the popular themes—nostalgic for their retro style, sustainable since they’re made of paper, and moody jewel tones, because they’re often seen in burgundy and dark green.
I hope you enjoyed this look at what decorating trends are in this Christmas! Whether you love them or leave them, remember the holiday spirit is about more than the decorations—it’s about creating a special place that brings you joy.
