Welcome to “Come Sit By Me”! It’s our chance to catch up on the little things I’d share with you this week if we could chat on the porch over coffee (or wine depending on the time of day).
Life Lately in a Nutshell.

- Last Saturday night we headed down to Waco to watch the Fourth of July fireworks, and we had an amazing spot to view them. We sat along the Brazos River on the Baylor campus and watched the colors reflect across the water while boats floated all around with the exact same view. We had planned to go down into the concert area at the baseball field where The Jacksons were performing, but after hearing how packed and stifling it was, we decided our little spot by the river with a breeze was just about perfect. I could hear the music which was good enough for me.

- One of my favorite things about coming down to Waco is being able to walk to campus for events and not have to deal with parking and traffic. What’s usually a quiet walk home was a bit different on America’s 250th birthday…let’s just say people were celebrating with a whole lot of enthusiasm. Tons of people everywhere, fireworks going off where there shouldn’t be, and at one point someone lit off a large one on the suspension bridge right after we walked past that exact spot. It felt a little less like “Chip and Joanna” Waco and a little more like the Wild West.
- It always amazes me how quickly the Fourth of July comes and goes, and summer somehow feels over once everyone starts talking about fall and back to school. I used to love torturing my youngest the week after July 4th every year by saying “Guess what I saw at Walmart today… school supplies!“, which was always answered with “Nooooooo!” It made me laugh every single time. And I guarantee they probably put them out front this week.

- Since we’re somehow already halfway through the year, I figured it was time to do a status check on the New Year’s resolutions I made back in January. Let’s start with the wins first. I’m actually ahead on my Bible reading plan. Early mornings you’ll find me reading with this little girl keeping me company (or waiting to be picked up like in this picture I took this morning).
- I’ve also been walking at least 10,000 steps most days, and while I haven’t always been perfect about sticking to my maximum number of cocktails per social activity, I’ve definitely cut back. The reading more books goal is better but inconsistent. I finally organized all my closet drawers, but haven’t tackled the hanging clothes. I also just this week bought a couple of wood cutting boards to help cut back on plastic in the kitchen, so I’m counting that as progress. As for serving more and starting that death binder? There’s always the second half of the year!

I love the report of your Fourth of July celebration! I’m also impressed with the remarkable job you have done by sticking to your New Year’s resolutions. The fact that you daily walk 10,000 steps is most impressive. I read all of the time, but I seldom find time to read books. Last year I joined a Bible study which has kept me reading the Good Book, but not as faithfully as you. There’s one project that I have done that you haven’t, yet. . My husband and I have finished the Death File, but then, we’re much older than you. I still assume that day is far in the future! Other projects that I finished so far, this year were to clean our old vinyl record collection and place in sleeves and record storage boxes, wash the house windows, inside and out, and organize my clothes closet and the pantry. The to-do list is much longer and seems more difficult. They include completing the continuing education requirements to keep my license, then lining a closet for silver, and the most daunting, organizing family photos and filling in the family tree forms using the photos. Some things are just more fun to do- like reading your blog!
Thanks for your encouraging words on my progress Mary! Rarely do I complete all of my resolutions, but it helps me to get some things done. And it always feels great to accomplish one of them. I so appreciate you taking the time to read the blog and even more your comments!💗
