Recently I was searching for a main dish to serve at a party where there would be a couple of friends that can’t tolerate a lot of seasonings (and let’s be honest, are just picky eaters). I figured pasta was pretty safe, but I also needed it to be simple and something I could do ahead of time. Then I remembered this delicious dish I’d had at a Mardi Gras potluck—so good that I had to hunt down who brought it and ask what it was.
This Angel Chicken Pasta Casserole checked all the boxes. It’s easy to prepare ahead of time and the cream sauce just gets better as it sits. Unlike a lot of other white sauces for pasta, this white sauce doesn’t separate or get weird after cooling, refrigerating, or freezing, making it perfect for parties, potlucks and meal trains!
“It’s in the ‘Freezes Beautifully’ section of my cookbook, and I want to make something that freezes beautifully!”

Instructions for Slow Cooker Angel Chicken.
1. Prep the chicken: Place chicken breasts into the slow cooker.

2. Make the sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine cream of chicken soup, room temperature cream cheese, room temperature butter, Italian dressing mix, garlic, seasoning, and chicken broth. Whisk until smooth.
SH&H Tip: I didn’t have time to let the cream cheese and butter sit out, so I cheated a little and heated the butter and cream cheese together in a bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds to soften it.
3. Pour sauce over chicken: Evenly pour the sauce over the chicken breasts.
4. Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 6 hours (or high heat for 4 hours).

5. Cook pasta: About 30 minutes before the chicken and sauce are done, cook the angel hair pasta according to package directions, drain, and toss with a little bit of olive oil or butter.
6. Serve: Remove the lid and shred the chicken with two forks. Add the cooked pasta to the crockpot and mix (or add them both to a large bowl and combine). Sprinkle individual servings or the whole dish in a serving bowl with fresh parsley to add some color.
SH&H Tip: Initially it will look like too much sauce, but after you add the pasta and it sits, it ends up being the right amount.

How to Make Creamy Angel Chicken in the Oven.
If you don’t have a crockpot or prefer to use your oven, this slow cooker recipe is easily adaptable as an Angel Chicken Pasta Bake (the chicken may not be quite as tender). Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Follow the same steps to prepare the sauce, and pour it over the chicken in a casserole dish prepared with non-stick cooking spray. Bake for 30-60 minutes depending on how thick the chicken pieces are, or until the chicken is fully cooked. Shred the chicken and combine the sauce with the cooked pasta.

Notes

I’m not sure if Angel Chicken is named after the pasta, or the delicious flavors simply taste heavenly, but it never disappoints!
